I was reading an interview with Mindy Kaling over at Vulture a little while ago, and Mindy had recalled a conversation with her mother about life advice and her mother instructed her with some of the best advice any girl can receive ‘You have to be your own best friend. If you always remember that, you will always have someone there with you.’ How incredible is that advice? It struck me really hard when I read it and I even shed a tear or two because I’m forever crying. I took the advice and evaluated my life a little bit, and for the first time considered myself my own friend, I jotted down the qualities I like in my own friends and my expectations of friendship and I started living by those standards (or trying to really hard), because in all reality if you can’t live by the standards you set for your friends then what kind of friend are you really, and in that case what kind of friends do you expect? This post is in general a call to be good to yourself, to be your own friend, not only will you feel better, not only will it enrich your personal relationship with yourself in addition to those around you.

So true, I find that I am my own best friend and my own worst enemy at different times!
I love this post. I totally relate and I think before you can care about other people or even love others, you gotta love yourself first. It’s hard in the society that we’re in to do that, but self compassion is key.
I’m so happy you liked it and I totally agree on society being so closed off sometimes.
Great reminder. I read her book not to long ago where she talks about this. The past year, I finally came to realization that I have to be the main source for my happiness. I can’t expect others ( like my bf) to create all my happiness, it really must come from within. The book, The Happiness Project, it a great read about this as well. When it comes to the friends I do keep, I find those who believe in your dreams ( vice versa) and who can be uplifting make your life truly rich. Great post!!
thank you! I’m glad you like it. I have that book sitting in my stack to read I keep hearing wonderful things I should pick it up sooner than I had plan!
I would!! I read it slowly ( partly because it was a great read), it helped provide me inspiration for my day when I read in with my morning coffee.
